Ramapo’s building crisis

July 29, 2016 by Michael Castelluccio

The following is from Robert Rhodes, Chairman of Preserve Ramapo.

The Hillcrest chapter of CUPON (Citizens United to Protect Our Neighborhoods) met last Tuesday evening. Thanks to Micheal Miller’s presentation it was a most educational and shocking evening.

Micheal presented a long list of building projects in Ramapo. He estimated that when approved, a total of about 3,000 new apartment units will be built. With an average of eight family members per unit, we can anticipate a total increase in our population of about 24,000 residents. In other words, the proposed projects will increase our town population by almost 20%! [Read more…]

Investigate East Ramapo’s school board shuffle: Two letters

July 29, 2016 by Michael Castelluccio

The following letters from Oscar Cohen and Kim Foskew reflect the outrage over the Board’s attempt to limit the term of Sabrina Charles-Pierre and to appoint an unknown to the Board.

Administrative oversight needs examination

On Tuesday night, the East Ramapo’s school board announced the appointment of Joseph Chajmovicz, an unknown to the public school community, to an open seat.

Mr. Chajmovicz, who it’s believed has no history of running for the board, was chosen over Jean Fields, retired Ramapo High School principal and co-chair of the Spring Valley NAACP Education Committee. [Read more…]

“A local NAACP chapter is criticizing the East Ramapo school board after an African-American trustee’s term was cut in half because the district failed to swear her into office in time.

But the board, while acknowledging it made an administrative error by not swearing in Trustee Sabrina Charles-Pierre within 30 days of the election results being certified, said it took corrective action Tuesday to ensure she remains on the board by appointing her to a one-year term.

Charles-Pierre was initially appointed to the board in October to fill a vacancy after Trustee Juan Pablo Ramirez resigned. During the May school board election, she ran unopposed to serve the remainder of the term, which is due to expire in June 2018.

Her term now expires in May 2017. [Read more…]

Death traps put firefighters at risk: Readers

July 27, 2016 by Michael Castelluccio

From The Journal News Opinion Page

Readers were enraged by a story of a fire in Monsey that officials warned could have endangered the lives of firefighters due to an illegal use of the building.

Firefighters trying to tackle flames and smoke shooting from a large Calvert Drive apartment building were blocked from entering the complex by dozens of boxes stored in a warehouse space, according to authorities.

The commercial warehousing in the building’s basement storage area turned out to be illegal. [Read more…]

July 21 Press Release from Rockland County

County Executive Ed Day and Commissioner of Health Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert announce that a Stage II Water Emergency has been declared in Rockland County, resulting in mandatory limitations on water used by all residents and businesses, beginning today, July 21, 2016. These water saving measures, which primarily affect outdoor water use, apply to all residents and businesses, regardless whether they get their water from a public water supplier such as Suez, Nyack or Suffern, or from their own private well. Indicted Supervisor St. Lawrence

Ramapo Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence

UPDATE: With the announcement that Christopher St. Lawrence’s appearance in Federal court this afternoon was postponed to August 4, the Town of Ramapo residents were presented with the embarrassing prospect of a shameful hat trick. On the same Thursday, August 4, the town supervisor, the executive director of the Ramapo Local Development Corp., and newly elected Ramapo Town Board member, Shmuel (Samuel) Tress will all be trudging off to court, with Troodler and St. Lawrence

appearing in Westchester County at the Federal Courthouse, and Tress will be in Airmont Village Court where he faces charges related to his unprincipled votes on property he owned, while he  was a member of the Ramapo Zoning Board of Appeals, and a felony charge of creating a false instrument, swearing those votes did not produce any personal gain for him. Troodler and St. Lawrence are looking at possibly long prison terms and Tress, if convicted, will be a two-time loser, having been  convicted of a previous felony, which he failed to inform the voters about when he was running for his current seat on the town board.
