Trustees on the contentious village board were split along their usual lines over the proposal, with Trustees Vilair Fonvil, Sherry McGill and Asher Grossman in favor and Mayor Demeza Delhomme and Deputy Mayor Emilia White against. [Read more…]

“Suffern Mayor Ed Markunas has said the village is exploring whether to separate from Ramapo over how the town has used millions in village taxpayer money for town-provided services over the years.

Suffern is already a “full-service village,” Markunas said, and decoupling from Ramapo would allow the village to “be in control of 100 percent of our tax base.” [Read more…]

Ward system case–Where we are now

November 19, 2016 by Michael Castelluccio

Vote 6 wards sign

Most of you know the story. After years of trying to prevent a vote on whether we should have a Ward System, the Town of Ramapo was ordered to hold a referendum on that question on September 30, 2014. On the ballot was whether the town should establish a ward system and divide the town into six separate districts (wards), each with its own representative on the Town Board.

Terrified by the transparency and accountability that a ward system of government might bring to Ramapo, town officials concocted a scheme to influence the outcome of the referendum, promoting disinformation and an atmosphere of deliberately induced disorganization. This was done in the hopes of assuring a NO vote, but also to leave open an avenue to challenge a YES vote based on the chaos and confusion they themselves created. [Read more…]

“Some in Rockland County have long chafed at how much water must continuously be released from Lake DeForest, the county’s largest reservoir, and sent down the Hackensack to ensure a supply for Bergen County.

The Rockland Water Coalition, for instance, has said the passing flow down the Hackensack “remains unwarranted and inequitable,” and that it puts Rockland customers “at greater risk during future severe drought solely in order to increase” the water levels in the Bergen reservoirs. [Read more…]
