Logo of the Ramapo Central School DistrictThe Ramapo Central School District will now be known as the Suffern Central School District.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the law Tuesday that allows the state education commissioner to change the school district’s name. The bill was co-sponsored by state Sen. David Carlucci and Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee and unanimously passed both houses of the state Legislature in June.

Ramapo Central seeks feedback on name change

November 2, 2016 by Michael Castelluccio

“Ramapo Central officials plan to render a decision sometime next month as to whether they will seek permission from the state to change the district’s name to Suffern Central as a way to differentiate itself from East Ramapo.

During a public hearing Tuesday evening on the idea, the school board heard a mixed reaction from the community, ranging from those who believed the district should move forward and longtime residents who believed eliminating the word “Ramapo” would be a blow to the area’s heritage. [Read more…]

Rockland school district fights Ramapo tax fees

September 18, 2016 by Michael Castelluccio

Ramapo Central school officials are backing a proposed state law that would allow districts to collect their own taxes, which officials say could potentially save residents thousands of dollars

Ramapo Central school district attorney Stephen Fromson said under the current system, the town of Ramapo charges taxpayers 1 percent of the tax levy to collect taxes, which amounted to about $900,000 for the 2015-2016 school year. For a Ramapo Central resident with an average school tax bill of about $10,000, this would mean a $100 fee.

Besides Ramapo Central, taxpayers in the East Ramapo and North Rockland districts were charged 1 percent of the tax levy for the collection. In East Ramapo this added up to an estimated $1.2 million for the 2015-16 school year; North Rockland taxpayers were on the hook for an estimated $1.3 million, according to figures compiled by Ramapo Central. September 18, 2016 by Michael Castelluccio

“The state has denied a request by a group of private school parents to temporarily reverse a new transportation policy that went into effect last week in the Ramapo Central school district.

Believing the district hadn’t explored all options before making a cut that affects hundreds of children, the parents asked for a stay on the changes until state Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia ruleson an appeal that they filed on the new busing plan.

On Friday afternoon, Elia decided against granting the request to parents, according to a state education department spokesman. The appeal is still being reviewed, he said. [Read more…]

Parents want Ramapo Central bus changes halted

September 15, 2016 by Michael Castelluccio

“Private school parents say they are continuing to grapple with the fallout from transportation cuts that went into effect last week in the Ramapo Central school district, but are hoping for some temporary relief until the state education commissioner rules on an appeal they filed to challenge the new busing plan.

Faced with an increase over the last several years in the number of students seeking buses to non-public schools, the district decided in the spring to pare down the mandated service to save money. [Read more…]
