Jeanette Kunow and Cheryl Valenti are candidates for the Suffern School Board in the upcoming Election, Tuesday, May 21.
The reasons for our endorsements follow here:
This year there are two open seats on the Suffern School Board and four candidates running for those seats. The candidates are Jeanette Kunow, Cheryl Valenti, Matt Kern, and Dr. Chris Nicpon. All four candidates willingly agreed to an interview and described their qualifications, positions on the issues, and motivations for running in an honest and open manner, without reservation. We believe that all four candidates are valued members of the community with good intentions who will make excellent school board members if elected.
It was a tough decision but after much discussion we ultimately decided to endorse Jeanette Kunow and Cheryl Valenti.
Valenti and Kunow have extensive experience as perennial members of the Parent Teachers Association and both have attended hundreds of Suffern School Board meetings over the past couple of decades. They have been very active in numerous school-based programs, sporting events, and service organizations. This long running participation in public education at more than one level gives them the institutional knowledge and insight so necessary to be an effective school board member.
One important issue for us was the future of the Suffern School District administration building. We were encouraged by Kunow and Valenti’s determination to maintain and preserve the administration building as an ongoing, viable, entity, despite the difficulties that might be encountered. We realize this may require costly repairs but believe that the administration building is so critical to the integrity of the Hillburn community, and thus the school district itself, that the associated expense is fully justified.
In regards to the situation involving Dr. Adams the Superintendent of Schools, Valenti and Kunow affirmed that they have no preconceptions or conflicts of interest whatsoever and will decide the case solely on the merits. They have enjoyed a good working relationship with the Superintendent in the past and have no reason to deal with him unfairly in the future. We are confident that Kunow and Valenti will be professional and reliable while providing the stability and civility conducive to a productive working environment on the school board.
Please come out and vote for Jeanette Kunow and Cheryl Valenti for Suffern School Board on Tuesday May 21st Polls are open from 6 AM to 9 PM.
