“Rockland Legislator Laurie Santulli has requested a resolution condemning recent actions by fellow Legislator Aron Wieder, D-Spring Valley, including comments Wieder made Friday outside the Rockland County Courthouse to a community activist and earlier statements against a state Assemblywoman.
“I am in no way saying that he is not entitled to his own opinion, however he is not entitled to embarrass our legislature,” Santulli said in her letter to Laurence O. Toole, legislative clerk.
The exchange took place Friday on the front lawn of the Rockland courthouse, after a press conference held by Young Advocates For Fair Education. YAFFED supports state Education Department efforts to enforce the law that requires all private schools to provide a substantially equivalent education to public schools.
Wieder saw Michael Hull, who is an administrator of the Facebook page “Clarkstown – What They Don’t Want You To Know.” Hull was walking toward Main Street some 30 feet away.
“You’re talking to an anti-Semite,” Wieder yelled toward Hull.
Hull walked back and stood near Wieder.
“You’re the anti-Semite of Rockland County,” Wieder said. Hull did not engage directly with Wieder, but briefly talked with a reporter.
Wieder followed up with a Twitter post of video showing part of the incident. “Today, I had the honor of calling out the notorious anti-Semite, Michael Hull, and telling him what he is to his face,” the post said.
In her letter to the Legislature’s clerk, Santulli, R-Congers, also referenced Wieder speaking out against state Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee at an Aug. 15 Ramapo Town Board public hearing. The meeting addressed a controversial zone change request for Pascack Ridge, which would allow some 220 housing units on fewer than 30 acres.
During his comments, Wieder singled out Jaffee, D-Suffern, for writing in a Journal News/lohud opinion piece last year about the proposed development. Wieder said that Jaffee inferred that the project will only serve one group.
Jaffee declined to comment Sunday.
Wieder has repeatedly criticized the proposed rules for non-public school and YAFFED founder Naftuli Moster.During the earlier press conference, Wieder was heard saying “shame, shame, shame” as Moster spoke.
