FOIL–Your Right to Know

Freedom of Information Legislation (FOIL) in New York provides direct access to almost all public documents. Go to the information page at Committee on Open Government and download a copy of the “Know Your Rights” pamphlet for an overview of the process. There are also sample application letters you can use to request information from the village or town Clerks and many other public agencies including school districts and courts. The law regarding open meetings is also presented on these pages in text that’s both detailed and readable.
